Visiting Bluffton University softball used a strong hitting attack in game one, and a solid pitching performance in game two on Saturday, as they recorded a doubleheader sweep against the Mount. The Lions, who fell by games scores of 12-3 in six innings, and 7-0, drop to 11-7 on the season and 1-5 in the HCAC. They are scheduled to return to action on April 12 when they host Denison University in a doubleheader.
The Beavers scored five runs in the first inning of game one, and added three more runs in the next inning, as they held a 8-1 advantage after two innings of action. Morgan Kain (Batesville, IN/Batesville) had a run-scoring double in the fourth inning, cutting the deficit to 8-2 but Bluffton would push across four more runs in the sixth inning. The Lions scored one run in their final at-bat, the bottom of the sixth, on a Bluffton error, as the game ended early due to the run-rule. Kain led the offense with three hits while Makayla McClurg (Aurora, IN/South Dearborn) added two hits. Paige Kiesewetter (Piqua, OH/Miami East) suffered the pitching loss, falling to 5-4 on the season.
Bluffton scored single runs in the first three innings of game two against the Lions, two of which were unearned while the Mount's bats were quiet. The Lions recorded just four hits in the game, including two by Paige Norton (Cincinnati, OH/Reading), and left seven runners on base. Bluffton finished the scoring with four runs in the seventh inning. Danielle Nichelson (Glencoe, KY/Gallatin County) dropped to 6-3 with the pitching setback.
