Box Score LOCATION: Schueler Field (Cincinnati, Ohio)
THE BASICS:
Mount St. Joseph (3-3, 3-1 HCAC) welcomed the Fighting Engineers of the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology into the friendly confines of Schueler Field on Saturday. The Lions would jump on top of the Engineers early and often en route to a 45-27 victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Lions offense which was sputtering in the first few weeks of the season, continued its recent run of success. As they would take the games opening kick-off and march 75 yards in eight plays, to score the games opening touchdown. The Freshman backfield combo for the Lions in Quarterback Chaiten Tomlin and tailback Cory Hastings led the attack on the opening drive. With Hastings capping the drive off with a 1 yard touchdown run.
Rose would score it first touchdown on an Austin Swenson pass, his first of 3 on the game, a little later in the quarter but a failed 2-pt attempt saw the Lions remain in the lead.
Mount St. Joseph was able to add another touchdown in the second quarter as Hastings scored his second 1 yard touchdown of the game. The drive a 12 play 89 yard scoring effort was highlighted by a catch and run by Kendall Sprowl of 57 yards, that set up the touchdown.
After a quick three-and-out by the Engineers, the Lions scored their second touchdown in 36 seconds of game action. Freshman Curtis Jones who was forced into action at running back due to injury scampered in for a 42 yard touchdown. Pushing the score to 21-6 in favor of the Lions.
The Lions would add a late field goal, and the Engineers would score a touchdown with :23 seconds to play in the half to settle the first half score at 24-13 Lions.
On their first possession of the second half the Lions would begin to really impose their will on Rose. As they marched the ball down the field mostly with the run, although the drive was capped off by a 15 yard touchdown pass from Tomlin to Hastings.
The rout was on, as the Lions were in complete control the rest of the way. Rose-Hulman was able to dent the scoreboard a couple of times but the game was never in doubt.
The Lions utilized a very balanced offensive attack, gaining 286 yards through the air, and 239 yards on the ground. And were physically dominating at the point of attack against a very solid Rose-Hulman defense.
STANDOUTS:
Chaiten Tomlin continued his very solid play, the young man looks less like a freshman everyweek. He was able to complete 17 of 26 attempts for 252 yards and 3 scores, but most importantly again no turnovers.
Hastings had a big day with 115 yards from scrimmage and 3 touchdowns, 2 rushing and 1 receiving. Jones was a real bright spot, previously listed as a defensive back, he was able to gain 79 yards on 6 carries with a touchdown.
Defensively the Lions were able to continue their solid play. They were led by Colby Webb who had 10 tackles to go along with a sack and a forced fumble. Kenny Thorton and Tavon Robertson combined to break-up 8 passes in the secondary.

The Lions travel to Earlham College on Saturday, to try to keep pace with the other teams at the top of the standings in the HCAC, the game is scheduled for a 2:30 pm kickoff.
