Box Score 2 Location: Montgomery, Alabama (Huntingdon College)
Basics: The Mount St. Joseph University softball program got off to a fantastic start as they traveled to Montgomery, Alabama to take on the Hawks of Huntingdon College.
How it Happened:
Game 1:
The Lions got an outstanding effort on the mound from Senior Paige Kiesewetter (Piqua, OH/ Miami East). Kiesewetter threw a complete game for the Lions in the opener, striking out five batters in the process. She only allowed four hits and three runs over her seven innings of work.
Offensively the Lions were led by the their potent top of the order. Leadoff hitter and Centerfielder Morgan Kain (Batesville, IN/ Batesville) went 2 for 2 at the plate, scoring 3 runs and driving in 1. Behind her in the lineup was Morgan Hoehn (Cincinnati, OH/ Colerain) was 4 for 4 scoring a run of her own. Kiesewetter also had a solid game at the plate with two hits and an RBI.
The potent top of the order coupled with solid pitching and defense carried the Lions to a 6-3 season opening win.
Game 2:
In game two it was an offensive explosion for the Lions, as they pounded out 14 hits scoring 12 runs. The top of the order again did and outstanding job as the Morgan's combined to go 6-8 at the plate, scoring five runs between them. Kain added four RBI and was a single short of hitting for the cycle. Katie Tarter also had a very good game in the second game, going 3 for 5 with a pair of RBI, while playing great defense at second base. Kiesewetter added 3 RBI and a run scored in the game.
On the mound for the Mount it was Danielle Nichelson (Glencoe, KY/ Gallatin County) getting the start and the win. Brianna Kauf (Orrville, Oh/ Orrville) pitched three strong innings of relief to get the save, her first of the season.
