Box Score 2 MINEOLA, Florida - The Mount St. Joseph University softball program opened their 2020 trip to Florida for the spring games with a pair of wins. The two wins pushed the Lions record back to .500 for the season. In game won the Lions relied on a strong offensive effort and a good outing by their ace to get the 9-1 win over Heidelberg. In game two it was a pitchers dual, that the Lions took by scoring the games lone run in the bottom of the sixth inning to get the narrow 1-0 win.
GAME ONE - MSJ 9 - Heidelberg 1
In game one coach Beth Goderwis sent her ace, junior Sarah Miller (Fischers, Ind./St. Theodore Guerin) to the mound. And Miller was dominant for the Lions, going the distance allowing only five hits and one earned run, while striking out five.
Miller was helped by an offense that came out of the gates swinging. Alehia Tucker (Covington, Ky./Holy Cross) led off the game with a double, eventually scoring the games first run on a single by Miller. The Lions added another pair of runs in the inning with Gracie Woodyard (Plainfield, Ind./Avon) hit a 2-run double.
The Mount added another pair of runs in the top of the second inning. Brooke Otto (Brookville, Ind./Franklin Co.) and Elizabeth Ivers (Shelbyville, Ind./Shelby Co.) each delivered an RBI in the frame.
The Lions added another run in the top of the fourth as Tucker doubled for the second time in the game, and was again driven in by Otto. The score remained 6-1 until the top of the 6th inning when they added another three-runs to bring the mercy rule into play. In the sixth Tucker hit her third double, and again was driven in by Otto. Then Rachel Gabbard (Ft. Thomas, Ky./Highlands) delivered the biggest shot of the inning, a two RBI base-hit.
The top of the lineup carried the day offensively for the Lions as Tucker, Otto and Ivers combined for seven of the teams 12 hits.
GAME TWO - MSJ 1 - Penn St.-Behrend 0
In game two of the day the Lions turned the ball over to sophomore Kamryn McCool (Brookville, Ind./Franklin Co.), and she did not disappoint in the pitcher's dual. McCool went the distance for the Lions, throwing a complete game three-hit shutout, while striking out six.
The Mount and Penn St.-Behrend each went scoreless over the games first five innings. As the teams combined for just four hits over the first five frames. Behrend would threaten to score in the top of the sixth inning, as the first two batters reached base, but McCool knuckled down to retire the next three batters.
The Lions would finally change the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth, as Otto led off the inning with a single, followed by an Ivers double. With runners at second and third and no-outs, Sarah Miller grounded out to second base to drive in the games lone run.
The game was not over though, as McCool who had yet to surrender a base on balls in the game, pitched herself into a jam with three walks in the inning. She again though was up to the task, as Penn State-Behrend left the bases loaded to end the game.
