Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

The Mount Falls to Defiance 2-1.

CINCINNATI, Ohio - On Wednesday, October 21st your Mount St. Joseph University Lions welcomed the Yellow Jackets of Defiance College to Schueler Field. Each squad was held in check in the first half showing a halftime score of 0-0. After halftime the Yellow Jackets were able to net a pair of goals giving them a 2-0 advantage. The Lions were able to trim the deficit in the 72nd minute of play with a penalty kick goal from Taidan Fox (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills). The Lions had another opportunity in the 88th minute of play having a shot hit the post but could not find the back of the net. After 90 minutes of play the Lions could not complete the comeback falling to Defiance 2-1.

In the first half the Lions defense held strong. allowing only 5 shots, 3 on target. The Lions countered the defense with an abundance of offense. The Lions tallied 7 shots, 1 on target but could not find the back of the net. Each squad headed into halftime without registering a goal. 

After halftime the Yellow Jackets were able to score early in the half. Just 3 minutes into the half Defiance's Armando Campos-Ortiz found the net giving them a 1-0 advantage. Following the goal roughly 20 minutes later the Lions were forced to play a man down due to a red card. Defiance was able to take advantage scoring a minute later in the 68th minute of play extending their lead to 2-0.

Just 4 minutes later the Lions were given an opportunity to get back into the game. In the 72nd minute of play a defender from Defiance was fouled for a handball in the box giving the Lions a penalty shot to trim the Yellow Jacket lead. Taidan Fox was called upon to take the shot and blasted it into the top left corner of the net making the Defiance lead only 2-1.

The Lions had the momentum on their side and continued to push the ball up field. With 2 minutes remaining in the contest the Lions had an opportunity to tie the game. Willis Johnson (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle) had a defender to his left on a breakaway. Johnson was able to get a shot off from approximately 10 feet out but was blocked by the defender and smacked against the post. The Lions were unable to score following the shot falling to Defiance 2-1. 

The Lions goalkeeper Gustavo Gutierrez (Montclair, Cali./Boone Co.) made 7 stops on the night while giving up 2 goals. The Lions totaled 11 shots, 2 on target, while 2 also hit the woodwork.
