Lions Earn Dramatic Win over Spalding, Finish 1-1 in LHTC

CINCINNATI, Ohio - Last weekend your Mount St. Joseph University Lions welcomed the Colonels of Centre College, the Battling Bishops of Ohio Wesleyan, and the Golden Eagles of Spalding to the Harrington Center for the Lauren Hill Tip-Off Classic. The Lions faced off against Spalding Friday night and Ohio Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon, splitting the games. 

The Lions hosted the Golden Eagles in game one of the LHTC. finishing in dramatic fashion.

The Lions got off to a hot start going on a 18-6 run to begin the game with Senior Maddie Haberthy (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mother of Mercy) scoring 11 of the 18 points. The Lions ended the first quarter holding a 6 point lead. 

In the second quarter the Golden Eagles fought back from their deficit and took a 1 point lead with 4:15 remaining until the break. But, the Lions would finish the half on a 11-4 run with Sophomore Shelby Turner (Pendleton, Ky./Pendleton) scoring 7 of the 11 points. The Lions headed into the break holding a 6 point lead. 

In the third quarter of play the Lions went back and forth with the Golden Eagles. The Eagles trimmed their deficit to just 1 point with 59 seconds remaining. After a pair of late free throws from Ellie Oldendick (Gallatin, Ky./Gallatin) and a 3-point bucket from Shelby Turner the Lions held a 4 point lead with only a quarter remaining. 

To begin the 4th quarter the Golden Eagles scored 10 straight points giving them a 6 point lead with 4:54 remaining. After being down by 10 with 2:33 remaining Keylasia Pouncy scored a layup followed by a 4-point play from Maddie Haberthy to bring the Lions within striking distance. Haberthy would score the 8 points of the game including a pair of free throws with 37 seconds remaining to tie the game at 64 to force overtime! 

To begin the first period of overtime the Golden Eagles went on a 8-1 run giving them a 7 point lead with 2:37 remaining. After a pair of free throws the Lions trimmed their deficit to just 5 points and with a Shelby Turner 3-pointer the Lions trailed by just 2 with 1:28 remaining. The Lions would put together a pair of key stops before Anyiah Murphy (Columbus, Ohio/Columbus Africentric Secondary) would get a steal at half court, and then passing the ball to Maddie Haberthy who would drain a 3-point bucket with just 15 seconds remaining! The Lions would then get another stop, leading them to a 74-73 OT victory. 

Maddie Haberthy led the Lions with 34 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists, and two steals. Shelby Turner followed finishing with a career-high 20 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assists and 3 steals. 

In the Lions second game of the weekend, they fell to the Battling Bishops of Ohio Wesleyan 94-55. Maddie Haberthy finished with 14 points, tying the MSJ all-time points record with her 1,450th point. Next week Haberthy looks to break that record as the Lions play host to the Student Princes of Heidelberg University on Saturday, November 20th.
