Box Score 1 |
Box Score 2 Birmingham, ALA – The Mount St. Joseph University softball team again took to the field in Birmingham Ala., for the second day of the Birmingham Southern Classic. The slate of games would not be any easier for The Mount as they again squared off with two quality opponents.
GAME 3 | Piedmont 6-MSJ 5 (Final, 8 innings)
The first game on Sunday morning saw the Lions face off with another solid team in Piedmont College. After they struggle offensively a bit on Saturday the Lions bats really began to wake up in this one. They put together a 9-hit effort, with seven different players registering hits.
Elizabeth Ivers was definitely the star of this game, hitting a pair of long homeruns and driving in all five of the Lions runs. Senior
Gracie Woodyard also had a pair of hits in three at-bats.
On the Mound it would again be the
Sarah Miller and
Kamryn McCool show, Miller started the game and pitched the front 3.0 innings. She struggled a little bit allowing four hits, and four earned runs, three of which came in the second inning. McCool again had a solid outing in relief allowing three hits and a pair of runs (one earned) over 4.1 innings. For the third time in as many games though she would surrender the walk-off loss. Despite the tough record McCool has gotten off to a fantastic start on the mound for the Lions in 2021.
Game 4 | MSJ 11-Louisiana College 5
If the Lions offense began to wake from hibernation in game one of the day, it was fully awake and roaring during game two against Louisiana College. As a team they had 15-hits and scored 11-runs, all of which were earned.
Louisiana College jumped out to a quick lead in the top of the first, drilling a 3-run homerun to open the scoring. The Lions battled back in the bottom of the first scratching across a run on an Ivers sac fly.
Louisiana College scored again in the top of the second inning, but then the Lions started their offensive onslaught in the bottom of the inning.
Alehia Tucker put a charge into a ball, drilling a grand slam to straight away centerfield.
The offense didn't stop, as they scored a pair of runs in each of the next two innings.
Gracie Woodyard,
Rachel Gabbard,
Brooke Otto and Miller each had RBI in the next two innings.
The final offensive nail in the coffin was the second homerun of the game and fourth on the day for the Lions, this one was a two-run shot by Otto in to left-center.
On the Mound it was
Gracie Smith who started and went the first two frame, allowing four runs. Miller came on in relief pitching 5.0 innings of 3 hit, 1 run ball!
