Lions hold off Redhawks en route to 7-6 victory!

PITTSBURGH, Pa. - Your Mount St. Joseph Lions traveled to Pittsburgh, Pa. this weekend to take on the Redhawks of La Roche. The Lions took pride in their defense this weekend only allowing 6 goals on 39 shots. The Lions also dominated on face offs winning 14 face offs to the Redhawks 3. 

To start the game the Lions started from behind giving up two goals in the first 6 minutes. Just before the first quarter came to a close the Lions were able to get one back with a goal from Sophomore Michael Addai (Cincinnati, Ohio/Winton Woods). At the end of the first quarter the Lions trailed 2-1. 

The Lions would begin the second quarter by conceding another goal to the Redhawks but answer back with 6:48 remaining in the half. Sophomore Cole Mericle (Lima, Ohio/Lima Senior) found the back of the net off the feed from Austin Combs (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) to trim the lead to just 3-2. Before halftime the Redhawks added on more goal showing a 4-2 La Roche lead at the break. 

To start the second half the Lions were firing. just 1:30 into the half the Lions found the net. This time it was Sophomore Kevin Smith (Cincinnati, Ohio/ St. Xavier) with the goal and Bryce Smith (Liberty, Township, Ohio/Lakota East) on the assist. The Lions didn't stop there as they scored two more goals, one from Bryce Smith and the other from Michael Addai assisted by Solomon Richards (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder). This gave the Lions a 5-4 lead with 5:20 remaining in the third quarter. With 1:34 remaining the Redhawks got the equalizing goal to make it 5-5. The Lions got that goal right back however just 40 seconds later Bryce Smith found the net for his second goal on the night on the feed from Cole Mericle. To finish the 3rd quarter the Lions led 6-5. 

The Lions picked up where they left off to start the 4th with another goal from Bryce Smith to give the Lions a 7-5 lead. The Redhawks were able to answer back with 12:07 remaining but that wasn't enough for La Roche as The Mount came away with the 7-6 victory. 

Bryce Smith ended with a hat trick on the day along with an assist. Off the bench Michael Addai added 2 goals to push the Lions to victory. Finally, returning from injury goalkeeper Alexander Dudash (Liberty Township, Ohio/Lakota East) put together an amazing performance only allowing 6 goals and making 14 saves to keep the Lions in the contest. 

UP NEXT: Your Mount St. Joseph Lions travel to Hiram, Ohio to take on the Terriers of Hiram College on Saturday, March 27th. The game is set to begin at 1PM!
