CINCINNATI, Ohio - Your Mount St. Joseph University Men's Soccer team played host to the Quakers of Earlham this weekend. The Lions were able to find the net two times in the victory as their record now sits at 1-1 to start the year. The Lions had strong play from freshman forward
Michael Abel who helped the Lions find the net on both of their goals.
The Lions started off slow allowing two shots from Earlham, one which found the net in the 15th minute of play. But the Lions answered quickly with three consecutive shots by freshman
Michael Abel, the first was saved in the bottom left hand corner, the next was blocked by an Earlham defender but the third times the charm as Abel stuck the ball under the keeper from about roughly 11 yards out to tie the game.
Earlham then followed with two more shots which found the hands of Sophomore goalkeeper
Nathaniel Chambers. After the first 45 minutes of play the score sheet read a tie of 1-1.
To begin the second half Abel found himself again trying for the net but was unsuccessful in the 52nd minute. Shortly after though, Junior Josh Bailey found himself with the ball just right of the net about 5 yards out when the Earlham defender attempted to clear the ball and cleared it directly into Abel's chest which then went straight to Junior
Andrew Kersey who was waiting in the bottom left hand corner of the goal. Kersey then softly tapped the ball into the net giving the Lions a 2-1 advantage in the 55th minute.
The Lions continued to shower the net with shots, having four shots in the next two minutes from both Abel and fellow freshman
Tristen Miller. After 90 minutes of play the score showed the Lions with a 2-1 advantage, winning their first game of the new season.
The Lions totaled 16 shots, 9 on target, in the contest. Abel accounted for 6 of the shots while
Andrew Kersey,
Joseph Stark, and
Tristen Miller all added 3 of their own.
