Mericle Scores 5 as Lions fall to HCAC foe Anderson

ANDERSON, Ind. - On Saturday, April 17th your Mount St. Joseph Lions traveled to Anderson University to take on the Ravens in a HCAC showdown. The Lions scored 9 goals but were not able to top the Ravens as they fell 19-9. 

The Ravens started the action off with 3 consecutive goals to give them an early 3-0 advantage. But the Lions would fight back with a goal from Solomon Richards (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) and a pair of goals from Cole Mericle (Lima, Ohio/Lima Senior) who ended with a total of 5 goals on the night. With 4:39 remaining in the first quarter the score was knotted up at 3. But, before the quarter was done the Ravens would add 3 more goals to their column making it a 6-3 game after the 1st quarter. 

To begin the 2nd quarter the Lions would pose a threat. Cole Mericle got things going for the Lions earning his hat trick just 4 minutes into the 2nd quarter. After a Ravens goal the Lions answered with a pair of goals from Nathaniel Bird (Liberty Township, Ohio/Lakota East) to make the score 6-7 going into halftime. 

After the break the Ravens would see the first action of the half scoring just 59 seconds into the half. But 3 minutes later Bryce Smith (Liberty Township, Ohio/Lakota East) would answer for the Lions making the score 7-8 Ravens. But, here is where the Ravens did their damage. The Ravens went on a 11-2 run to end the game. They scored 9 goals in the 3rd quarter to break it open. The Lions 2 goals came from Mericle who had a fantastic day in spite of the loss. After the final whistle blew the Lions fell to the Ravens with a final score of 19-9. 

Cole Mericle stole the show for the Lions today displaying incredible numbers. Mericle scored 5 of the Lions 9 goals on the day and also recorded an assist in the contest. Nathaniel Bird also put away two goals for the Lions. 

UP NEXT: Your Mount St. Joseph Lions welcome the Quakers of Earlham College to Schueler Field on Wednesday, April 28th. The game is scheduled to begin at 7pm.
