Box Score CINCINNATI, Ohio - On Wednesday, April 28th your Mount St. Joseph Lions welcomed the Quakers of Earlham College to Schueler Field for a HCAC matchup. Coming off back-to-back losses the Lions bounced back in a big way. A pair of late goals for the Lions secured the victory, ending with a final score of 11-8.
The Lions got off to a hot start scoring the first two goals of the contest.
Bryce Smith (Liberty Township, Ohio/Lakota East) got things started for the Lions with his first of 5 goals on the night off a pass from
Cole Mericle (Lima, Ohio/Lima Senior). Following
Bryce Smith with 10:53 remaining in the first quarter
Kevin Smith (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Xavier) scored his 4th goal of the season off a pass from
Solomon Richards (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder).
The Quakers would answer back with two goals of their own tying the score at 2. But with 1:28 remaining in the first
Nathaniel Bird (Liberty Township, Ohio/Lakota East) netted his first of 3 goals in the contest off a pass from Mericle giving the Lions a 3-2 advantage going into the 2nd quarter of play.
To begin the 2nd quarter of play the Quakers would even the score with a goal just a minute and a half into the quarter. The Lions would answer back however with goals from
Bryce Smith and
Jesse Robinson (Lexington, Ky./Frederick Douglas) to give the Lions a 5-3 lead with 4:59 remaining into the half. The Quakers wouldn't back down, scoring 2 goals to end the half tied at 5.
In the third quarter the two teams went back and forth trading goals. The Lions scored two in the quarter one from
Bryce Smith and the other from Robinson as the quarter ended with the score tied at 7 a piece.
To start the 4th the Lions took control netting the first two goals of the quarter.
Bryce Smith would net his 4th goal of the contest followed by Bird's 2 goal giving the Lions a 9-7 lead with 7:59 remaining. The Quakers wouldn't go away scoring another goal to trim the Lions lead to just 1 goal with 5:35 remaining. With 57 seconds left in the game Bird put away his 3rd goal of the contest, completing the hat trick and giving the Lions a 10-8 lead. For insurance, the Lions scored another goal,
Bryce Smith scoring his 5th goal of the night with just 37 seconds remaining to give the Lions an 11-8 victory.
Bryce Smith led the Lions on the night with 5 total goals on 8 shots on target giving him 22 goals on the season.
Nathaniel Bird also added 3 goals for the Lions giving him 9 total for the year.
Cole Mericle was great offensively despite scoring any goals. Mericle tallied 3 assists on the night en route to a Lions victory.
