CHAMPIONS!!! Lions Take Down Transy to Win HCAC Title

Box Score LEXINGTON, Ky. - Mount St. Joseph and Transylvania have seemed to be on a crash course for Saturday's Championship matchup since the beginning of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference season. Today the second seeded Lions and first seeded Pioneers squared off at Kall Field at Transy with the HCAC title on the line.

Once again Coach Goderwis turned the ball over to senior Sarah Miller to start the game in the circle, she was great through the first three innings retiring the first nine Pioneers she faced.

The Lions offense got the scoring underway in the bottom of the second inning. Freshman Casey Bramble opened the frame with a triple just on a balll  to centerfield, fellow freshman Maiah Hodge followed with a single to shortstop.

The Lions got their first run as Transy made the games first mistake, Hodge broke to steal second and after a bad throw from the catcher Bramble raced home for the games first run. An out later freshman Rachel Gabbard delivered another big RBI base-hit for the Lions. Later in the inning with two on and two out Alehia Tucker delivered and RBI double into centerfield. In the inning the Lions pushed across three taking the early 3-0 lead.

The Lions added another pair in the third inning as it was Gabbard delivering a big RBI single down the right field line with a pair of Lions on board. Bramble scored on the swing and Hodge came around to score on an error by the right fielder.

Transy finally got their offense going in the top of the fourth inning, as they had back-to-back one out extra base-hits to push across their first run. Miller then knuckled down and struck out the Pioneers fourth and fifth hitters to strand a runner in scoring position.

Sarah continued to keep the Pioneers off balance until the top of the 6th when she gave way to junior Kamryn McCool. McCool was absolutely dominant to close the game, pitching two perfect innings, striking out two to complete the game!

In the end it was The Mount taking the game 5-1 and earning the right to represent the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference in the NCAA DIII National Tournament!
