CINCINNATI, Ohio - This weekend your Mount St. Joseph Lions welcomed Anderson, Wilmington, Greenville, and Manchester to the Harrington Center to compete in the Charlie Wrublewski Invitational. The Lions were in control all weekend long only losing 1 set in their 4 matches played.
DAY ONE:
MSJ vs WILMINGTON:
The Lions faced the Quakers of Wilmington in the first match of the invitational and did not disappoint defeating them in straight sets. Sophomore
Emily Abshire (Cincinnati, Ohio/Miami Valley Christian Academy) led the way with 16 kills while hitting a spectacular .400 in the match. Sophomore
Grace Young (Harrison, Ohio/Harrison) and Junior
Brooke Aselage (Tipp City, Ohio/Tipp City) were also phenomenal. Young finished with 12 kills while hitting .556 and Aselage finished with 8 kills while hitting .381. Junior setter
Sam Buschur (Maineville, Ohio/Little Miami) controlled the match notching 36 assists for the Lions.
MSJ vs GREENVILLE:
After a strong performance in game one the Lions headed back onto the court to take on the Panthers of Greenville who took home the SLIAC Championship a season ago. The Lions did not miss a beat from the first match and handled the Panthers in straight sets. Aselage and Abshire led the Lions again with kills each with 13. Freshman
Morgan Whitaker (Milford, Ohio/Milford) also stepped up for the Lions totaling 6 kills while hitting .417 in game two. Buschur was excellent for the Lions totaling 40 assists in game two.
DAY TWO:
MSJ vs MANCHESTER:
To kickoff day two of the invitational the Lions squared off against conference foe Manchester. The Lions were successful once again defeating the Spartans in 4 sets. Just like day one Abshire and Aselage led the way with 18 and 14 kills respectively. Freshman
Megan Mahon (Cincinnati, Ohio/West Clermont) added some fire as well totaling 9 kills while hitting .350 in the match. Buschur added on to her impressive day one with 46 assists.
MSJ vs ANDERSON:
To conclude the invitational the Lions faced off against another conference foe, the Ravens of Anderson. The Lions quickly ended the invitational taking down the Ravens in straight sets. Once again Abshire led the way for the Lions with 15 kills. Young and Aselage followed with 10 and 9 respectively lifting the Lions to victory. Buschur finished off her impressive weekend with 38 assists and 3 service aces.
As for the whole invitational
Emily Abshire led the Lions with 62 kills while hitting .374 on the weekend.
Brooke Aselage finished with 44 kills while hitting .236 along with 6 blocks.
Grace Young finished with 28 kills while hitting .323.Young also finished with 15 blocks, 1.15 per set.
Sam Buschur finished with 160 assists and 7 service aces while totaling 8 blocks. Sophomore
Erin Androne (Cincinnati, Ohio/Reading) finished the weekend with 46 receptions without an error while totaling 77 digs, 5.92 per set.
UP NEXT:
Your Mount St. Joseph Lions will travel to Springfield, Ohio at Wittenberg University next weekend September 17th & 18th to compete in the 2021 Wittenberg Tournament. The Lions will face Wittenberg on Friday at 4pm and then Marietta at 10am and Alma at 2pm on Saturday.
