ADA, Ohio - On Friday your Mount St. Joseph Lions traveled to Ohio Northern to take part in their weekend tournament. The Lions squared off versus two top 20 opponents on day one, #16 Muskingum and #14 Ohio Northern. The Lions would lean on Junior
Brooke Aselage (Tipp City, Ohio/Tipp City) and Sophomore
Emily Abshire (Cincinnati, Ohio/Miami Valley Christian Academy) to take control of the game offensively.
MATCH ONE | MSJ 3 - #16 MUSKINGUM 2\
To kickoff the weekend the Lions were faced with a tough task, taking on #16 Muskingum. The Lions got started early winning set 1 by a score of 25-23. The Lions rode that momentum into the 2nd as they breezed past the Fighting Muskies 25-14. The Lions in the 2nd set hit .367, only making two errors in the set opposed to Muskingum's 7.
But, the Fighting Muskies wouldn't go down easy as they took set 3 by a score of 25-22 taking advantage of the Lions miscues. The Lions would then drop another close set, this one ending 25-21 to set up a tense set 5. The Lions would seize their opportunity and take control of set 5 winning 15-10!
Offensively the Lions were lead by
Emily Abshire and
Brooke Aselage who finished with 16 and 15 kills respectively.
Grace Young (Harrison, Ohio/Harrison) was unstoppable from the middle of the court racking up 6 blocks for the Lions.
Sophomore libero
Erin Androne led the way with a match-high 36 digs and
Sam Buschur chipped in 45 assists in the win.
MATCH TWO | #14 ONU 3 - MSJ 1
In match number two of the tournament the Lions would again face a ranked opponent, this time the host Polar Bears of Ohio Northern who currently sit at #14 in the nation.
The Polar Bears were dominant from the word go in this match, as they raced out to a 2-0 lead. Winning the first two sets by a combined score of 50-26. The Mount though continued to fight, taking the fourth set 25-22 to give themselves a chance.
ONU was just a little too much for the Lions in set number four though finishing the match winnning 25-20.
Again the Lions were carried offensively by Abshire, joining her as the lone other Lion with double-figure kills was
Megan Mahon.

The Lions will again take to the court in the ONU Invitational on Saturday, this time squaring off with another pair of quality opponents in Denison and Wittenberg.
