ADA, Ohio - The Mount St. Joseph University women's volleyball team continued to play well on day two of the Ohio Northern Invitational. They opened day two by handing Denison their first loss of the season, and followed that up by taking down Wittenberg to move to 3-1 on the weekend!
MATCH ONE | MSJ 3 - Denison 1
The Lions opened the day with a matchup with Denison, and again the Lions opened the match on fire. They took the first two sets of the match by a combined score of 50-30.Â
As has been the case throughout the early season
Brooke Aselage and
Emily Abshire were absolutely outstanding for coach Spinney. The pair combined for 32 kills in the four set match, while hitting .306 (Abshire) and .280 (Aselage) respectively.Â
Grace Young was also outstanding in the middle for the Lions hitting a game-high .400 while registering nine kills, five block assists and a solo block.Â
Aselage also led the team with 21 digs, Grace Willking and
Erin Androne each pitched in double-digit digs as well, combining for 30 digs. Setter
Sam Buschur continued her solid play as well spreading the ball around to the tun of 44 assists in the match.
MATCH TWO | MSJ 3 - Wittenberg 2
The Lions match with Wittenberg was without a doubt the closest match they have played thus far this season. With three of the four sets of the match being decided by two-points including the decisive 15-13 line in the fifth set.Â
Witt jumped out to the early lead taking set one 26-24. The Mount then won sets two and three, each at 25-23 to take control of the match.Â
The Tigers bounced back to take set four 25-14 to set the stage for a fifth and final set that would decide the match. The fifth set was extremely tight through the early portion. A three point run for The Mount saw them take a 9-6 lead, and look like they would secure the win. Witt though stormed back to take an 11-10 lead in the set. The Mount would outscore the Tigers 5-2 over the next seven points to secure the win, with a pair of kills coming from Abshire in the run.
A trio of Lions each pounded out 14 kills in the match, Asalage, Abshire, and Young. With Young again leading the way with an outstanding .406 hitting percentage.
