Lions Open up 2022 Season going 1-1 at Alvernia Univ. Tri-Match

READING, Pa. - On Saturday, January 15th your Mount St. Joseph University Lions traveled to Alvernia University to compete in a tri-match versus Marymount Univ. and the hosting team Alvernia. The Lions struggled out of the gate dropping their first match to Marymount in straight sets. The Lions bounced back in their second match defeating Alvernia in 5 sets to split on the weekend. 

Mount St. Joseph - 0        Marymount - 3 
In the Lions first match of 2022 they struggled but did not go down without a fight. The Lions dropped the first two sets by a score of 25-20. In the third set The Mount went back and forth with Marymount including extra sets as Marymount came out victorious 31-29. Veteran Jason Hascher (Miamisburg, Ohio/Alter) lead the Lions with 10 kills. Also, Senior Jack Spohn (Columbus, Ohio/Olentangy) led the team in hitting percentage with .500 including 5 kills and 5 blocks. Rey Sanchez (Arvada, Colo./Ralston Valley) was also impactful for the Lions with 18 assists and 6 kills.

In the Lions second match they came out much stronger taking the first two sets 25-22 and 25-23. The Lions would then drop the next two sets by narrow margins setting up a winner take all 5th set. The Mount trailed early on in the 5th set but finished with 5 straight points to seal the victory 15-9. Jason Hascher led the Lions again in kills registering 17 kills. Jack Spohn put on a show in the Lions win accumulating 13 kills, 3 service aces, and 4 blocks while hitting .500. Freshman Ryan Bollhauer (Cincinnati, Ohio/Lasalle) was also impactful for the Lions registering 7 kills and 2 blocks while hitting .235.

Your Mount St. Joseph Lions are on the road again. This time The Mount is traveling to Utica, New York to face off against Baruch College, St. John Fisher College, Wentworth Institute of Technology and Nazareth College. The Invitational will take place on the campus of the Suny Poly. The Lions first two matches will begin on Saturday, January 21st at 4PM.
