CINCINNATI, Ohio - On Wednesday January 5th your Mount St. Joseph Women's Basketball team hosted the Hanover Panthers on senior night. The Lions came into the game with a 1-3 conference record while the Panthers were slightly ahead with a record of 2-2. The Lions slow start from behind the three caused them to trail 43-27 at the break. At the start of the second half, a flip switched for the Lions as they finished the game shooting 10-16 from the three point line in the second half as that would boost them to a 82-74 victory.
The Lions got off to a slow start offensively as the Panthers got out to a 14-4 start before a pair of layups by
Chloe Jansen (Fort Thomas, Ky./Highlands) and
Ellie Oldendick (Gallatin, Ky./Gallatin) trimmed the lead to 6 by the media timeout. As we got back to play, the Panthers would then go on a 11-4 run to end the first period of play.
The second period wasn't much better for the Lions as the panthers came out scoring the first 8 points after connecting with back to back three pointers increasing their lead to 21 points. The final eight minutes of the second period the score would go back and forth. As the buzzer sounded to end the period, the score was 43-27 in the Panthers favor.
After the break, the Lions offense was electric. Junior guard
Chloe Jansen started the quarter with a pull up jumper then pulled down a defensive rebound and pushed the ball up the floor to Junior
Carlee Daulton (Ripley, Ohio/Ripley Union Lewis Huntington) for two points. Throughout the quarter the Lions would shoot 6 of 10 from the three point line with
Chloe Jansen making 3 of them. Senior
Maddie Haberthy (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mother of Mercy) and Sophomore
Ellie Oldendick would connect with two more. The Lions would Finish the quarter with a bang as Sophomore
Shelby Turner (Pendleton, Ky./Pendleton) would drill a three pointer as time expired to give the Lions a 55-54 lead heading into the 4th.
As the 4th period of play began, the Lions offense would continue where they left off by starting the quarter with a three pointer and then a block by Senior
Haley Scott (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) that would lead the lions on a fast break to increase the lead to 6. The Lions lead would grow to 11 before the Panthers would cut into the lead. With one minute left to play the Lions lead by 2,
Maddie Haberthy would push the ball down the floor to find
Ellie Oldendick in the left corner as she hit a three point shot to increase the lead to 5. The Lions would then get a stop on defense and
Shelby Turner would ice the game with three free throws as the Lions would pull out the 82-74 victory.
Chloe Jansen led the Lions 25 points and followed that up with 5 rebounds and 4 assists.
Maddie Haberthy would add 17 points and 7 assists in her final game at the Harrington Center.
