MONTGOMERY, Ala. - On Saturday, February 26th your Mount St. Joseph University softball team traveled down to Montgomery, Ala. at Huntingdon College to compete in a pair of two game series. On Saturday the Lions played game one of each of the series starting off by facing Millsaps College and following with Huntingdon College. In game one versus Millsaps the Lions offense got started in a hurry putting up 7 runs in the openning frame. The Lions would carry that momentum with them through the final 4 innings run-ruling Millsaps by a score of 11-3 after 5 innings of softball. Next the Lions would square off versus Huntingdon. The Lions surrendered 3 runs early and were forced to battle back late. The Lions would add a pair of runs but would ultimately fall 3-2.
GAME ONE: MSJ - 11 MILLSAPS - 3
The Lions woke up the bats early in their first game of the weekend putting up 7 runnings in the bottom of the first inning. The scoring began with when
Elizabeth Ivers stepped to the plate with the bases loaded. Ivers was hit by a pitch bringing in the first score of the game. Kaci FInchum would then draw a walk bringing in another run.
Casey Kemp would then reach on a fielder's choice bringing in anotgher run making the score 3-0.
Rachel Gabbard would then send a fly ball to center field as a sacrifice fly bringing in the Lions 4th run. Following Gabbard was the freshman
Emily McDonald. McDonald would slap a ball into left field bringing another run into score for the Lions.
Ali Lang was next for the Lions as she reached on a fielder's choice knocking in the Lions 6th run of the inning.
Macey Staley was the final Lion to knock in a run in the first grounding out to second base as
Emily McDonald scored the Lions 7th and final run of the openning frame.
It wasn't until the 3rd inning that Millsaps would respond. Millsaps would add one run in the 3rd and then two more in the 5th to trim the Lions lead to just 7-3.
But, the Lions put the nail in the coffin in the bottom half of the 5th.
Rachel Gabbard knocked in her 2nd and 3rd runs of the game off a double to center field. Following the double
Emily McDonald would reach first on an error bringing in another run.
Macy Cornelius would drive in the final run for the Lions off a single to center field. After 5 innings the game was called due to a run-rule as the Lions left victorious 11-3.
Casey Kemp was in the circle for the Lions and had a productive outing. Kemp went 5 innings only giving up 6 hits and 3 runs, 2 earned, while striking out 6.
GAME TWO: MSJ - 2 HUNTINGDON - 3
In game two the Lions fell early giving up a pair of runs in the openning frame and another in the 2nd as they trailed 3-0. But, in the third inning
Macy Cornelius would single to right field bringing in
Emily McDonald for the Lions first run of the game. But, each offenses were held in check thanks to some great pitching. The Lions would find life however in the 7th as Cornelius would knock in her 2nd run of the game off a double to left field. But, the Lions couldn't complete the comeback in the 7th falling 3-2.
Kamryn McCool was in the circle for the Lions in the defeat. McCool however was great tossing 6 innings while only giving up 4 hits on 3 runs while adding 5 strikeouts.
