How we got here:
Last week Mount St. Joseph University traveled to Alfred, N.Y. and defeated the Saxons 43-37. The three headed monster of
Josh Taylor,
Cornell Beachem Jr., and
Joey Newton would continue to carry the load for the Lions offense. The special team's unit for the Lions would also play a key roll in the matchup. Kicker
Kyle Farfsing would convert on both of his field goal attempts and 5 extra points. Farfsing's performance and Taylor's 20/31 passing for 305 yards and 5 touchdowns would win them All HCAC players of the week.Â
The Flying Dutchmen enter the matchup winning their first two games on the season. Last week Hope would defeat Coe by the score of 33-24. The Dutchmen produced 248 yards on offense but leaned heavily on the defense. Hope would force 6 interceptions and a fumble last Saturday and would go on to return 2 of those turnovers for a touchdown.Â
When the Lions have the ball:
Cornell Beachem Jr.,
Josh Taylor and
Joey Newton will look to continue their strong offensive performances this season. Last week Beachem Jr. would have 15 touches and convert those into 140 total yards and a touchdown. Newton contributed a team high 5 receptions for 117 yards and 2 touchdowns. The Lions would provide a balanced attack in the receiving room as there was 8 different Lions to catch a ball while 4 different players would find the endzone.
Defensively the Flying Dutchmen are led by Junior linebacker Mohamed Kamara who has a team high 20 tackles on the season. On the defensive line there have been 5 dutchmen who have a sack and will look to continue the pressure in this week's match. Senior free safety, Adam Vander Kooy leads the Dutchmen in turnovers with 3 interceptions and 1 pass breakup while also forcing a fumble.
When the Flying Dutchmen have the ball:
On offense the Flying Dutchmen will continue their balanced attack through the air and on the ground. Quarterback Chase Brown, is averaging 318 passing yards a game and has 4 touchdowns on the young season. 288 of those passing yards have gone to leading receiver TJ McKenzie who also leads the receiving room with two touchdowns. Kenyea Houston who has rushed 26 times for 115 yards and a touchdown.
On the defensive side of the ball for the Lions,
Anthony Wright leads the Lions with 22 total tackles on the year while
Austin Price has been a ball hawk in the secondary coming up with 2 interceptions in as many games. In last weeks win, Junior
Nate Owens lead with 9 tackles while
Mason Owens would finish with 4 pass breakups including 2 major plays in the 4
th quarter.
