Lions Drop a Pair but Down Thiel to Open Up the 2023 Season

ALLIANCE, Ohio - This past weekend your Mount St. Joseph University men's volleyball team traveled to Springfield & Alliance, Ohio to take on Messiah University, Illinois Institute of Technology and Thiel College. The Lions had a tough start facing off against #9 Messiah and IIT but followed with a dominant win over Thiel.

In the Lions first match, they faced off against #9 Messiah. Messiah got ahead early and claimed the first two sets. In the third set the Lions wouldn't go away. The Lions got out to a 20-15 lead but could not close out the set win falling to Messiah 3-0.

In the Lions second match of the weekend they faced off against IIT. IIT shot out of the gates claiming the first set 25-23. In the second set the Lions battled to keep the score even. But, IIT would survive the second set as the Lions fell 30-28. In the third set IIT would again jump ahead. The Lions would battle back and even the score at 23 but couldn't finish the win falling to Illinois Institute of Technology 3-0. Ryan Bollhauer was dominant for the Lions despite the loss finishing with 10 kills while hitting .471.

But, the Lions weren't done yet as they faced off against Thiel College to close their opening weekend. The Mount wasted no time in their first set flying past Thiel 25-11 thanks to a massive 8-0 run. In the second set, the Lions had to work a little harder. The set went into extra points with the Lions coming out on top 30-28. In the Lions final set, they would cruise to victory. The Lions dominated the point of attack in the third set taking down Thiel 25-17 and sweeping them in sets 3-0. Ryan Bollhauer again led the Lions in kills with 11 while hitting .333. Jude Lewis was also effective for the Lions adding 10 kills while hitting an amazing .529.

UP NEXT: Your Mount St. Joseph Lions are back in action on Thursday, February 2nd when the Lions welcome the Thomas More Saints to the Harrington Center. The match is scheduled to begin at 6 PM.
