Lions Continue Their Hot Start Taking Down Capital 69-63

COLUMBUS, Ohio - On Monday, November 13th your Mount St. Joseph University Lions traveled to Capital University to take on the Comets in a non-conference matchup. The Lions kicked off their season with two big wins in the Lauren Hill Tip-Off Classic. The Lions carried that momentum into Monday night's contest taking down the Comets 69-63.

To start the game, each squad would trade leads. Each squad had chances to build their lead but neither could. With 4 minutes remaining in the quarter, buckets from Freshman Whitney Warfel and Junior Anyiah Murphy gave the Lions a 3 point lead. But, after a 3 pointer and a few free throws, the Comets would take a 1 point lead with 1:40 to go. But a pair of late turnovers for the Comets gave the Lions a lane to attack. Jump shots from Karlee Mills and Ella Stivers gave the Lions a 3 point cushion heading into the 2nd quarter.

Mills carried her momentum between quarters nailing a 3 pointer to begin the 2nd. The Lions would then begin to play with a lead. With the lead came fouls, as the Lions continued to get to the charity stripe. Free throws from Mills, Warfel, Morgan Jenkins and Chloe Jansen would give the Lions a 5 point advantage. The Comets would answer back pulling the game within 1 with 4:40 remaining in the half. But late 3 pointers from Murphy and Jenkins solidified the Lions lead at 5 heading into the half ahead 36-31.

To start the 2nd half Karlee Mills came out firing. Mills cashed in on a 3 pointer giving the Lions a 8 point lead. Each squad would trade buckets before the Comets would pull within 2 halfway through the 3rd quarter. After a Whitney Warfel layup with 5 minutes to go, neither team could find the back of the rim until there was just 1:18 remaining in the quarter. The Comets would pull within 1 but a 3 pointer from Jenkins and a layup from Madison Drummonds gave the Lions a 4 point advantage heading into the final 10 minutes.

In the final quarter of play the Comets made in interesting. The Lions continued to score but lost their rhythm halfway through the 4th quarter. The Comets took advantage tying the game at 56 with 4:42 remaining in the contest. The Lions would immediately answer with a pair of free throws from Warfel and 1 from Murphy. After a defensive stop, Jenkins nailed a jumper to give the Lions a 5 point lead with 1:49 left to go. The teams would trade buckets until the Comets would start fouling. With 27 seconds remaining 3 free throws from Chloe Jansen and 1 from Jenkins gave the Lions a 6 point advantage and the victory with a score of 69-63.

Morgan Jenkins led the way for the Lions. Jenkins did a little of everything Monday night finishing with 14 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists, 4 blocks and 3 steals. Freshman Whitney Warfel also was tied for the team-high in points. Warfel finished with 14 points, 5 rebounds, 1 block and 1 steal.
