Women’s Lacrosse hot start Leads them to a victory over Waynesburg

Waynesburg, Pa. – Over the weekend the Mount St. Joseph Women's Lacrosse team traveled on the road to take on Waynesburg University. The Lions wasted no time getting out of the gates as they started the game on a 7-1 run and never looked back from there. The Lions would then hold on to defeat the Yellow Jackets 12-9 and pick up their first victory of the season.

The first period was an offensive show for the Lions. 30 seconds into the match, Sarah Murray was able to win the draw control and find Emily Etris for the goal. In the next draw control, Murray was able to once again win and earn possession for the Lions. On the offensive end, Etris would return the favor as she earned an assist finding Murray for her first goal of the match. With the score sitting 2-1 after a Yellow Jackets goal, Abigail Cole took a shot that was saved but she was able to pick up the ground ball of the shot and find the top right corner for a goal to improve the Lions lead to 3-1. At the eight-minute mark of the quarter Murray once again scored to improve the lead. In the next two minutes of action, the Lions were able to find the back of the net twice after a free position goal from Chirly Gillman and Sarah Murray scoring her third goal of the quarter. With the quarter winding down to an end, Murray continued her fantastic quarter of play scoring yet another goal to giver her team an 7-1 advantage after the first.

In the second period, Waynesburg would continue to fight back and they scored three unanswered goals to bring the scored to 7-4. During the period, the Lions were able to force 7 turnovers and maintain their lead heading into halftime.
The second half was a back-and-forth affair for the two evenly matched teams. After Waynesburg scored first to bring the deficit to two goals, Abigail Cole converted a MAN-UP opportunity scoring her second goal of the game. The next two goals in the period were on a foul by the Yellow Jackets earning the Mount back-to-back free position shot goals by Chirly Gillman and Sarah Murray. At the end of three period, the Mount took a 10-6 lead into the final 15 minutes.  

In the fourth and final quarter, the Mount jumped out early to build on their lead as Gillman once again scored giving her a hat trick on the afternoon. Two minutes later, Rachel Winkler would earn a free position opportunity which resulted in her scoring her first goal of the match and giving the Mount a 12-6 lead. Waynesburg did what they could to fight back into the contest but were unable to complete the comeback as the Lions earned a 12-9 win for their first victory of the season.

The Lions were led offensively by Sarah Murray she provided the Lions with 5 goals while adding 4 ground balls and causing 2 turnovers on the defensive end. Chirly Gillman was also able to earn a hat trick scoring 3 goals and 3 caused turnovers. In goal, Laura Schmidl picked up her first win while saving 6 shots during the game.

Up next for the Lions is another road as they travel to Bethany, WV. To take on Bethany College. The Game is scheduled to start at 1:00 PM.
