CINCINNATI, Ohio - For the third year in a row the Mount St. Joseph University softball team is headed south to Lexington, Ky. to attempt to win the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) Tournament and clinch the automatic bid into the NCAA DIII Tournament. The past two season's the Lions have entered the HCAC Championship as the #2 seed in the tournament, and that is once again where they find themselves.
The Lions got to this point after once again having an extremely successful regular season. The Lions enter the tournament with a 29-11 record, and a 14-2 record inside the HCAC. In the first round of the HCAC Tournament they will face off with either the #3 seed the Franklin College Grizzlies or the #6 seed the Defiance College Yellow Jackets. The first-round contest is scheduled for a 5:30 PM first pitch. They swept the regular season series against both potential opponents.
Once again coach Goderwis heads into the tournament with a loaded roster, which is once again led by an outstanding starting pitcher. Junior ace
Casey Kemp enters the tournament leading the league in wins (17), ERA (1.11), conference wins (9) and conference ERA (.61). Offensively they have been oustanding, boasting a deep and talented lineup that hit .324 as a team on the season. Junior
Kaci Finchum leads the way amongst the normal position players with a .384 average. Freshman
Courtney Keller and her MSJ single-season record 13 homeruns, lead a powerful group in the middle of the order that includes
Maddie Kennedy (8 HRs),
Elizabeth Ivers (8 HRs) and
Macy Cornelius (22 RBI), while
Ali Lang and
Kelsi Stevenson consistently set the table.
