Comeback Falls Short for Football at Hope

HOLLAND, Michigan - The Mount St. Joseph football team headed north to Holland, Michigan to take on the Hope Flying Dutchmen on Saturday. The outcome was hanging in the balance until the final seconds but the Lions came up short, losing 40-35.

The Lions raced out to a quick 14-0 lead early in the first quarter and looked to be on the way to another victory. Hope though fought their way back scoring 28 straight points to close the first half leading 28-14.

In the second half the Lions fought back cutting the lead to 34-28 at the end of the third quarter. They then scored to take a 35-34 lead early in the fourth quarter. Hope took advantage of a Lions special teams miscue as they recovered a fumble on a punt attempt, setting up their final score of the game.

Trailing 40-34 with the ball, the Lions moved down the field moving all the way down to the Hope 10-yard line with 15 seconds to play. It seemed that Josh Taylor found Cornell Beachem Jr. in the corner of the endzone for the would-be game winner, but Beachem was ruled out of bounds on the play.

UP NEXT | The Lions will have a bye week next week before opening HCAC play on September 30 vs. Manchester.
