FRANKLIN, Indiana – On Wednesday, January 10th your Mount St. Joseph University women's basketball team traveled to Franklin, Indiana to take on the Grizzlies of Franklin College for a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference matchup. The Lions wasted no time building a lead, exploding for 45 first half points and taking a 20-point lead heading into halftime. After halftime, the Lions continued to hold their lead while Graduate Student
Chloe Jansen marked her name into the record books. Roughly, halfway through the 4
th Quarter, Jansen knocked down a layup from the right block to reach this historic milestone. Following the score, the Lions remained in control taking down the Grizzlies of Franklin 84-72.
To begin play, the Lions built a massive lead.
Morgan Jenkins was hot early for the Lions leading them to a 17-4 run with just under 5 minutes to play in the quarter. After the run, the Grizzlies would get a pair of free throws to fall. The Mount would answer again with another dominant run. The Lions would end the quarter on a 10-4 run with 5 different Lions scoring to take a 27-10 lead.
In the second, the Lions offense continued to click. A three-pointer from Jansen got the quarter started extending the Lions lead back to 20. Franklin would provide some resistance, cutting the lead to 16 with 6:29 left to play in the half. But, the Lions would answer with
Karlee Mills and Jenkins. To end the half, Mills & Jenkins combined for 13 points to give the Lions a 45-25 lead heading into halftime.
Following halftime, the Lions remained in control. Buckets from Mills & Jenkins again extended the Lions lead to begin the half. Franklin would answer back but not enough to put a dent in the lead. To end the quarter, the Grizzlies knocked down a pair of jumpers to even the teams' totals at 19. After three quarters of play, the Lions were ahead 64-44.
To begin the fourth, the Grizzlies finally found their hot hand. Franklin started the quarter on a 9-3 run to trim the lead to 14 with 7 minutes remaining. Jansen answered for the Lions knocking down a particularly significant layup. Jansen received a pass in the center of the lane from
Madison Drummonds. Jansen quickly gathered, took one dribble to the baseline while sending a layup towards the backboard scoring her 1,000
th career point in The Mount's navy and gold.
Following the bucket, each squad had no issues scoring. The Grizzlies would cut into the Lions lead but not enough to reach single-digits. After 40 minutes of play, the Lions earned their 4
th straight HCAC victory taking down Franklin 84-72.
Mills & Jenkins were both dominant in the victory for the Lions. Mills tied her career-high in points with 26. Jenkins was versatile finishing with 25 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists while shooting 60% from the field. Jansen earned an impressive milestone reaching 1,000 career points. Jansen finished her historic night with 10 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists.
