CINCINNATI, Ohio – The Mount St. Joseph women's volleyball team opened Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference play with a 3-1 win over Earlham at home on Saturday.
The opening set of the match was tight early, with the set tied at six
Sydney Doty headed to the service line. The freshman would go on a five-point run at the line, with a pair of kills coming from both
Katie Rolf and
Aubrey Miranda in the run. They would not trail again in the set, taking set one 25-17.
The second set would tight the whole way, and Earlham looked to have the late advantage with a 24-22 lead. A serving error by the Quakers gave the Lions the sideout, and a kill by
Hannah Graves tied the set back at 24. The Mount would eventually take the set 28-26 for the two sets to none lead.
Earlham was dominant through much of the third set, and held a late 20-10 lead. The Mount went on a 10-3 run, most of which came with
Ava Maxwell at the service line to get back into the set. Earlham did win set three, but the Lions showed determination in getting back into the set.
The Lions took the early advantage in the fourth set, pushing their advantage to four at 10-6. The Quakers came back to tie the set at 14, but were unable to push to the lead. MSJ outscored Earlham 11-3 from that point to secure the 25-17 set win and a 3-1 match victory.
Graves led the way with 15 kills, joining her in double-figures was Rolf and Miranda who each had 10 kills. Graves also led the way on the defensive side, with a team-high 18 digs. Joining her in double-figures was
Grace Wilking (14) and
Jasmine Butler (13). Butler dished out 36 assists in the victory.
