MONTGOMERY, Alabama - The Mount St. Joseph University baseball team got their first win of the 2024 season on Sunday. The Lions took down Vermont State-Castleton 9-5 behind a solid start from
Ethan Mason, and a 12-hit day from the offense.
The sophomore right-hander, Mason took the ball to start the game for the Lions. Castleton would threaten in the top of the first, but Mason was able to work around trouble to keep them scoreless. He would settle in, and eventually pitch 4.0 innings of scoreless baseball.
The Mount would get the first run of the game in the third inning, freshman
Cole Carrigan drilled a one-out double into centerfield for his first collegiate hit. An out later,
Anton Mere slapped an RBI single into right field to get the scoring started.
In the fifth inning
Lleyton Flamm came out of the bullpen to relieve Mason. The Lions defense would not help the sophomore right-hander. Castleton would load the bases and eventually score a pair of unearned runs, as the Lions committed a pair of errors in the inning.
Castleton would score two more in the top of the sixth to take a 4-1 lead. Freshman
Jeff Kist relieved Flamm with two on and one out in the inning. He would walk the first batter he faced, before a pair of huge strikeouts ended the Castleton sixth.
The Lions would score once in the bottom of the sixth to pull within two runs. The offense would then explode with seven runs over the next two innings to pull away from Castleton.
Freshman
Matt Frye would come on with one out in the ninth inning, to retire the final two hitters and register his first college save.
