Box Score 2 CINCINNATI, Ohio - The Mount St. Joseph baseball team opened the home portion of their 2024 schedule by welcoming Ohio Wesleyan to Cincinnati on Saturday. In a double-header that was tight throughout both games, the Lions were able to get a game two win to secure the split.
GAME ONE - Ohio Wesleyan 4 - MSJ 2
In game one the Lions sent junior
Derek Richter to the hill to start the game, the right-hander had a solid start. He would go the front 4.0 innings allowing three hits and an earned run while striking out four.
Richter retired the Battling Bishops in order in the top of the first inning. The Lions would threaten in the bottom of the inning as
Anton Mere walked to open the game, and
Jake Lawson followed up with a single. They would fail to score though as the Ohio Wesleyan pitcher retired the next three in order.
Ohio Wesleyan would get on the board in the top of the second with a solo homerun to lead off the inning. The Lions answered back with a pair in the bottom of the third inning. Lawson drew a one-out walk, and
Ethan Mason followed up with a single through the left side. They would get their first run of the game after a wild-pitch and a passed ball by Ohio Wesleyan, which would score Lawson.
Kevin Schaaf then had an infield single to drive in the second run of the inning.
Nolan Miller came in to relieve Richter in the fifth, and surrendered two runs to give Ohio Wesleyan the lead. The Lions would threaten in the bottom of the inning with two on and two out, and Ohio Wesleyan made the biggest play of the game on defense. Schaaf smoked a ball into rightfield that was destined for the gap, but the OWU right fielder made a diving catch to rob Schaaf and the Lions.
Ohio Wesleyan would add a run in the top of the eighth to get the score to 4-2 which would eventually be the final.
GAME TWO - MSJ 2 - Ohio Wesleyan 1
