CINCINNATI, Ohio - The Mount St. Joseph baseball team hosted the Asbury Eagles on Tuesday night at Midland Field in Batavia for a non-conference matchup. Asbury led most of the way but the Lions tied the game in the bottom of the ninth to force extra innings, eventually falling 8-6.
The Lions sent
Zach deSylva to the mound to start the game, the sophomore threw the front 2.2 innings allowing four hits and two unearned runs.
In the bottom of the first inning the Mount struck first with a single run.
AJ Meyer led off with a walk, he quickly stole second and was advanced to third on an sacrifice bunt from
Austin Buckle.
Brennan Martin then grounded out to second to score Meyer.
Asbury scored twice in the third to take the lead,
Daniel Brayton relieved deSylva with two outs in the inning and retired the side. Brayton would go the next 2.1 innings allowing only 1 hit and 1 run.
The Eagles addeed a single run in the fifth and sixth to take a 4-1 lead. The Lions answered with one in the bottom of the sixth.
Ethan Mason led off with a single,
Sean Moore followed with a walk and
Kaden Snodgrass drilled an RBI base-hit into left field. They loaded the bases with no outs on a bunt single by
Devin Perry. They would only score the one run as Asbury turned a double-play and got a fielder's choice to retire th side.
Asbury scored one more in the top of the eighth to push their lead to 5-2, the Lions answered with one in the bottom of the inning.
With one and and one-out
Zac Clow tripled to right center to score a run, Asbury would leave him stranded retiring the next two batters.
Heading to the bottom of the ninth the Lions trailing by two the Lions went to work,
Brennan Martin led off with walk. Martin was lifted for
Luke Emery as a pinch runner, Mason and Moore were both hit-by-pitch to load the bases.
Jordan Harley was called on to pinch hit and laced an RBI single into centerfield. An out later
Zac Clow tied the game after grounding into an RBI fielder's choice, forcing the game into extra innings.
In the top of the 10th Asbury would score three times to take an 8-5 lead, the Lions answered by scoring one in the bottom but were unable to score anymore falling 8-6.
UP NEXT: The Lions are headed into a big four-game HCAC weekend, weather permitting they are scheduled to play at Bluffton on Saturday and at home against Manchester on Sunday.
