RICHMOND, Ind. – On Saturday, February 3
rd your Mount St. Joseph University women's basketball team traveled to Earlham College to take on the Quakers in a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference matchup. The contest was close to start as the Lions held a seven-point advantage heading into halftime. Following halftime, the Lions exploded offensively combining for 54 points while shooting 6-9 from three-point range to take down the Quakers 90-59.
To begin, the Lions built a solid lead scoring three unanswered buckets to take a 7-0 advantage. But, the Quakers battled back tying the score at 14 with just 30 seconds remaining in the quarter. The Lions were able to answer before the buzzer with
Whitney Warfel knocking down a pair of free throws to give The Mount a 16-14 lead after the first quarter.
In the second quarter, the Lions were able to boost their advantage early. A pair of layups from
Madison Drummonds and a pair of free throws from
Morgan Jenkins gave the Lions a six-point lead with 6:51 remaining in the half. But, the Quakers again answered pulling within three with 2:26 left. The Lions scored a pair of unanswered buckets to end the quarter holding a 36-29 lead.
Out of the locker room, the Lions seemed poised to build their lead. A 13-5 run kicked off the quarter for the Lions with
Karlee Mills knocking down a pair of three-pointers and free throws. Drummonds closed the run with a layup giving the Lions a 49-34 lead with 6:46 remaining. The Quakers answered but couldn't slow down the Lions' electric offense as the Lions held a 60-44 advantage through three quarters of play.
In the fourth, the Lions looked unstoppable offensively. After each team traded a pair of buckets to start the Lions went on a 17-5 run. Drummonds led the way scoring 7 points giving the Lions an 80-53 lead with 4:34 left to play. But, the Lions weren't finished offensively closing the game on a 10-5 run.
Hailey Guingrich led the charge scoring four points as the Lions took down the Quakers 90-59.
Mills & Drummonds led the way offensively for the Lions. Mills was lethal from beyond the arc finishing the game 4-7 with 20 points, 7 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 steals. Drummonds was dominant in the paint finishing just shy of a double-double with 20 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 blocks. Jenkins was everywhere for the Lions finishing with 11 points, 6 rebounds, 5 steals, 4 assists and 2 blocks.
