Box Score 2 LEESBURG, Florida - The Mount St. Joseph softball team went into day two of The Spring Games looking to wake up on the offensive side of the ball. After a day one in which they struggled against some outstanding pitching, they bounced back in a big way Wednesday. In game one they took down Carroll University 8-2, they then beat Messiah 9-4.
GAME ONE | MSJ 8 - Carroll 2
In game one of the day Coach
Beth Goderwis sent her senior ace
Casey Kemp to the circle to start the game. Kemp was outstanding in this one with the complete game win. She allowed just five hits, two runs (zero earned) while striking out six Pioneers.
Offensively the Lions got it going early, scoring twice in the bottom of the first inning. The inning opened with a pair of groundouts before the Lions went to work.
Maddie Kennedy singled,
Kaci Finchum and
Lauryn Miller then walked,
Macy Cornelius followed it up with a bases loaded, two-out, two-strike, two-RBI basehit up the middle to score two.
They would add three more in the bottom of the third inning. Kennedy led off with a single up the middle, and out later Miller walked again, then Kemp walked as well. With
Sydney Hughbanks at the plate, Carroll would attempt to pickoff Kennedy at third, but the ball went into left field for the Lions to score their third run of the game. Hughbanks then laced a two-run single into right to push the Mount ahead 5-1.
They would add three more in the sixth inning.
Emily McDonald led off the inning with a walk, an out later
Alayna Flynn reached on an error by the shortstop. Kennedy then bunted for a hit to load the bases, and Finchum laced a two-run single into centerfield.
All-told the Lions registered nine-hits in the ball game, Kennedy (3), Finchum (2) and Hughbanks (2) each had multiple hits in the game.
GAME TWO | MSJ 9 - Messiah 4
In game two, coach Goderwis turned the ball over to sophomore
Lauryn Miller. The lefthander was really good for the Lions, throwing a complete game to get her first win of the season. She allowed eight hits, and two earned runs, striking out a pair of Messiah batters.
Messiah scored in the bottom of the first, but Miller did a really good job to limit the damage stranding two runners on base to end the inning.
The Lions offense was quiet until the third inning, when they scored four. With one-out in the inning McDonald was hit by the pitch,
Alayna Flynn would reach on a fielder's choice that ended up an error. An out later Kennedy walked to load the bases, Finchum then laced another two-run single into center field and Miller hit a two-run single.
They would add a single run in the fifth, three more in the sixth and one more in the seventh.
The Mount had 14-hits in the game, Flynn and Finchum each had three.
Kelsi Stevenson and McDonald each had a pair and Cornelius, Kennedy, Miller and Hughbanks added one a piece.
