Lions Drop Opener In New York to St. Mary's; Guingrich Ties School Record

NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Mount St. Joseph women's basketball team battled throughout four quarters on Friday, but a late push by St. Mary's College of Maryland proved to be the difference as the Lions fell 73–63 at the ARC Arena. In the game Hailey Guingrich tied the Mount St. Joseph women's basketball record of 18 rebounds in a game.

The game was tightly contested from the opening tip. Both teams traded baskets early, with the Lions matching St. Mary's score-for-score in the first quarter. Mount St. Joseph continued to play with energy on both ends in the second, edging ahead briefly behind strong interior play and efficient shooting to take a narrow advantage into halftime.

After the break, St. Mary's began to find a rhythm offensively, while the Lions continued to grind on the glass and look for quality looks in the half court. Despite Mount St. Joseph's defensive effort, the Seahawks used a late third-quarter run to gain momentum heading into the final period.

The fourth quarter saw the Lions make multiple pushes to close the gap, but St. Mary's capitalized at the free-throw line down the stretch to maintain control. Mount St. Joseph continued to fight until the final buzzer, cutting the deficit to single digits late, but was unable to overcome the closing surge.

Karlee Mills led the Lions offensively with 17 points while adding five assists. Guingrich turned in a dominant performance on the boards, finishing with 16 points and a game-high 18 rebounds to go along with four assists. Sam Price added 10 points, while Jordan Patterson chipped in nine points on efficient shooting.

Mount St. Joseph finished the game shooting over 43 percent from the field and was nearly even on the glass, showcasing its physicality and resilience throughout the contest.

The Lions will look to regroup and build on the positives from the performance as they take to the court tomorrow against Norwich University.
