Box Score 2 Demorest, GA – The Mount St. Joseph Lions kicked off their season in Georgia with a doubleheader against Piedmont University, battling through a tough opening loss before bouncing back with a commanding win. The Lions fell just short in Game 1, dropping a close 3-2 contest, but responded in Game 2 with an impressive 9-3 victory.
Game 1: Piedmont Edges Out the Mount in a Tight Contest
Sophomore
Alayna Flynn delivered at the plate, driving in both of the Lions' runs, scoring
Maddie Kennedy and pinch-runner
Skylar Fletcher. Despite being out hit 7-4, the Mount's defense remained sharp, as neither team committed an error. All three of Piedmont's runs came in the first inning, and while the Lions fought to close the gap, they couldn't push across the tying run.
Game 2: The Lions Roar Back for a 9-3 Victory
Determined to even the series, the Lions wasted no time in Game 2, jumping out to a two-run lead in the first inning behind leadoff hitter
Macy Cornelius, who posted a stellar .750 slugging percentage. Even after Piedmont tied the game in the first and took the lead in the third, the Mount capitalized on three Piedmont errors and continued to apply pressure. They plated runs in six different innings, ultimately putting up nine on the board.
The Lions' pitching staff kept Piedmont in check, holding them scoreless after the second inning. Junior
Lauryn Miller led the offensive charge with an impressive 1.467 OPS, closely followed by sophomore
Avery Wiltermood at 1.333. Freshman Leslie Reimers earned the win in relief, entering in the second inning and allowing just two hits while issuing two walks.
Next Up: The Lions hit the road next weekend, traveling to Montgomery, Alabama, for matchups against Rhodes College and Huntingdon College on February 22nd and 23rd.
