CINCINNATI, Ohio - The Mount St. Joseph baseball team opened the 2025 season in Huntingdon, Alabama with a 6-1 win over Wheaton.
The Lions had to use just two pitchers in their season opener as
Matt Frye and
Nolan Miller combined to go the distance. Frye got the start and went 4.2 innings working around six walks, by allowing just one hit and striking out six. He gave way to Miller with two on and two out in the fifth inning, after surrendering a walk he got a bases loaded strikeout to end the frame. He would finish the game pitching the final 4.1 innings allowing only a single hit, while striking out seven to earn the win.
The Lions got their first runs of the season in the top of the third inning, scoring twice.
Anton Mere got the rally started with a one-out double, scoring on an RBI single by
Jordan Harley.
Andrew Harrison was hit by pitch, and an out later
Brennan Martin drilled an RBI single into deep right.
They went on to add a run in the fourth, with
Cole Carrigan coming around to score on an error after reaching with his first hit of the season.
In the sixth inning the Lions scored two more, pushing their lead to 5-1.
Jake Sanders led off with a single, Carrigan was hit by the pitch to reach. They were both advanced on a perfect sac bunt by
Austin Buckle. Sanders scored on and RBI groundout to shortstop by Mere. After Harley walked, Carrigan scored before the inning was over.
They would one more in the 8th inning,
Jackson Gutzwiller was hit-by-pitch to start the inning.
Will Record moved him to second on a sac bunt and he scored on and RBI single by Carrigan.
The Mount had eight hits as a team in the game with Harley and Carrigan each registering two.
