Baseball Gets Mercy-Rule Win Over Northland

AUBURNDALE, Florida - The Mount St. Joseph baseball team got another huge win at the RussMatt Invitational, and once again it was the offense leading the charge.

The Mount banged out 17 hits and scored 21 runs on their way to a 21-2 win over Northland on Tuesday. The Lions got the scoring started with a five spot in the top of the second inning. Brennan Martin led off with a double and was driven home by a Tyler Herbers two-run homer. Jake Sanders then doubled to left field and moved to third on a ground out. He would score on an RBI single into center by Austin Buckle. Buckle would then score after a failed pick off attempt went down the first baseline. Anton Mere then singled on a beautiful bunt, stole second and third base and scored on an sacrifice fly by Jordan Harley

The would score nine times in the top of the third, Martin and Herbers each drew one out walks and scored on a triple by Sanders. An out later Buckle doubled to center to score Sanders. Mere reached via base on balls and Harley was hit by pitch to load the bases. Andrew Harrison then drew a walk to score Mere, and Ethan Mason forced in another with a hit by pitch. Martin then stepped in and hit his second grand slam of the trip, this one a monster bomb to straight away right field.

On the mound it was freshman Zach deSylva took the ball for his first start of his collegiate career and did not disappoint. He pitched the front 4.0 innings allowing only 2 hits and 1 earned run while striking out five, earning the first win of his career. The Mount had to use only two pitchers in the game as fellow freshman Ian Busch came on in relief in the fifth. Busch would finish the game allowing only 1 hit and 1 earned run while striking out 4, earning the first save of his career.

Of the 17 hits the Lions registered 12 were extra base-hits. AJ Meyer, Devin Perry, Sean Moore, Harrison, Sanders, Martin and Buckle each had a double. Sanders added a triple and the team hit four home runs, Martin, Herbers and Nick Shields all homered while Nate Bray hit the first homer of his career.
