Softball Sweeps Franklin to Open HCAC Play

CINCINNATI, Ohio - The Mount St. Joseph softball team finally got the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference portion of their schedule underway on Saturday. The team's first two HCAC double-headers had to be rescheduled due to weather, but for the Lions it was worth the wait. They defeated Franklin twice on Saturday winning game one 8-2 and game two 3-1.

GAME ONE | MSJ 8 - Franklin 2

The Mount sent Lesleigh Reimers to the circle to open the game, and the freshman was oustsanding for coach Goderwis. It was the second complete game of the season for Reimers, allowing six hits and one earned run securing her seventh win of the season.

Franklin got on the board in the with a single run in both the first and second innings, but Reimers did well to pitch out of trouble and not allow a big inning in either frame.

The Mount came back to tie the score in the third, Macy Cornelius walked with one out and an out later Shelby Rakosky hit her second home run of the season to tie the game.

The game remained tied at two until the bottom of the sixth inning, when the Lions sent 10 batters to the plate and scored six times. Lauren Miller, Sydney Hughbanks, Emily McDonald and Cornelius all had RBIs in the inning.

Reimers allowed two baserunners in the sevent but got three straight outs to secure the win.

GAME TWO | MSJ 3 - Franklin 1

In game two of the double-header it was Mollie Sharp's turn to take the circle for the Lions. She continued her outstanding run of form, pitching her third consecutive complete game. Sharp like Reimers in game one pitched out of tough situtations all game long, allowing 8 hits and two walks but only a single earned run.

Once again it was Franklin who scored first scoring a single run in the third. Sharp got a big strikeout with the bases loaded and two outs to strand three.

The Lions answered immediately, tying the game in the bottom of the inning. Kiley Hankenhof led off with a single, and an out later Cornelius lifted a sacrifice fly into right field.

They would add another run in the bottom of the 4th, and added one more in the sixth on a Lauren Miller homer.
