BEREA, Ohio – The Mount St. Joseph Lions continued their strong early-season campaign with a gritty doubleheader on Saturday, taking on John Carroll and Baldwin Wallace in back-to-back battles.
MATCH ONE: MSJ 3 - John Carroll 2 (25-21,23-25,25-21,11-25,15-13)
In a hard-fought five-set thriller against John Carroll, the Lions showed resilience and heart, edging out their opponent in a tightly contested match. After taking the first and third sets, MSJ dropped a tough fourth set by a 14-point margin but stormed back to win the decisive fifth set 15-13.
Sophomore Aubrey Miranda led the offensive charge with 17 kills on 33 attempts, posting an impressive .333 hitting percentage. Junior Emma Sicking was a workhorse at the net, recording 16 kills on 61 swings, while sophomore Sydney Doty added 16 kills on 39 attempts, hitting at a .256 clip. Senior Hannah Graves chipped in 12 kills on 42 attempts to round out a balanced attack.
Freshman Ava Moore and sophomore Ginger Johnson continued to quarterback the offense effectively, tallying 28 and 26 assists, respectively. On the defensive end, sophomore Lyndsey Stephenson turned in a stellar performance with a match-high 29 digs. Graves added 17 digs, and Sicking contributed 10 of her own.
MATCH TWO: MSJ 1 - Baldwin Wallace 3 (19-25,23-25,25-22,17-25)
The Lions returned to the court later in the day to face Baldwin Wallace, putting up a fight but ultimately falling in four sets.
Graves and Sicking once again led the offensive efforts, each tallying 16 kills, Graves on 52 attempts and Sicking on 46. Miranda added 12 kills on 29 swings, and Doty added key contributions o on her 25 attempts. Moore dished out 29 assists, while Johnson added 16.
Defensively, Stephenson continued to shine with 31 digs. Sicking recorded 17, Graves added 14, and sophomore Ava Maxwell made her presence felt with 13 digs of her own.
