CINCINNATI, Ohio – The Mount St. Joseph women's basketball team took on the Rose-Hulman Fightin' Engineers in a late-season Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference matchup on Wednesday night. The Lions jumped out to an early lead and cruised to a 70-55 win.
The Lions' senior leaders led the way in the victory. Karlee Mills scored a game-high 24 points on an extremely efficient 7-of-11 shooting night, including 2-for-3 from three-point range. Morgan Jenkins added 19 points on 8-for-12 shooting and a perfect 2-for-2 from deep. Bella Crawford was the final Lion in double figures, as the freshman scored 14 points. Sam Price had an outstanding all-around performance, finishing with eight points, 10 rebounds, six assists and six blocks.
Mount St. Joseph outscored Rose-Hulman 17-9 in the first quarter, with Jenkins doing the heavy lifting early by scoring seven of the Lions' first 17 points. In the second quarter, Rose-Hulman cut the lead to five with 5:10 remaining, but the Mount stretched the advantage back to 11 by halftime. On the Lions' final possession of the half, Price was triple-teamed in the post and found a wide-open Mills, who drilled a three as time expired to make the score 35-24 at the break.
In the third quarter, Rose-Hulman outscored the Lions 19-14 to enter the final 10 minutes down just six and looking to finish off the comeback. In the fourth, the Mount's lead remained at six with 6:11 to play, but that's when the Lions turned up the pressure. Defensively, they held Rose-Hulman scoreless for more than four minutes and used that stretch to fuel an 11-0 run to put the game on ice.
Overall, the Lions turned in a fantastic offensive performance, shooting 54.3 percent from the field and 54.5 percent from three-point range. They recorded assists on 12 of their 25 made baskets and outrebounded the Fightin' Engineers 25-17.
