Lions Drop Doubleheader at Huntington

MONTGOMERY, ALABAMA – The Mount St. Joseph University softball team traveled to Huntington College to open their 2026 season on Sunday. The Mount fell in the doubleheader, 10-5 in Game 1 and 4-1 in Game 2.

GAME ONE | MSJ 5 – Huntington 10

Huntington got on the board first with two runs in the bottom of the first inning, taking an early 2-0 lead. The Hawks would add another run in the bottom of the second, giving them a 3-0 lead. The Lions got their scoring started in the top of the third inning, scoring three runs to tie the game at 3-3. Skylar Fletcher started the inning off with a single to left field. After an error by Huntington and a stolen base by Alayna Flynn, Shelby Rakosky singled to left, scoring two. The Mount would add another run off another Hawks error.

Huntington would add two in the bottom of the third and retake the lead at 5-3. In the top of the fourth, the Lions would rally with two outs as Alayna Flynn singled up the middle to score Skylar Fletcher. Then, Shelby Rakosky also singled up the middle to tie the game at 5-5. The Hawks would score five runs in the bottom of the sixth and go on to take game 1, 10-5.

Shelby Rakosky was 2-4 with 3 RBIs, Avery Wiltermood went 1-4 with a double and an RBI, and Alayna Flynn went 2-3 with an RBI.

GAME TWO | MSJ 1 – Huntington 4

The Hawks took an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first and added another in the bottom of the second, extending their lead to 3-0. The Mount responded in the top of the third, with Calli Fletcher leading off the inning with a double. After Fletcher was sacrificed over, Shelby Rakosky singled to right field, putting the Lions on the board.

Huntington would add a run in the bottom of the fifth, giving them a 4-1 lead. In the top of the sixth, Mackinley Lawson was hit by a pitch, and Alix Streeval pinch ran for her and stole second. Sydney Hughbanks would single to left, but Streeval was thrown out at the plate, ending the Mount's threat. The Lions threatened in the seventh but ultimately fell in game 2, 4-1.

Shelby Rakosky was 1-4 with an RBI, Calli Fletcher went 2-3 with a double, a run, and Alayna Flynn went 1-3.

UP NEXT: The Lions will travel to Demorest, Georgia, where they will take on Pfeiffer University for one game and Piedmont University for three. Game one and two are scheduled for Saturday, February 28th, at 12 PM and 2 PM, and games three and four are scheduled for Sunday, March 1st, at 11 AM and 1 PM.
