Mount women's basketball team loses second straight close road game, falling 64-61 to Betheny (WV) College

Bethany College jumped out to an eight-point lead at intermission and held off a Lions' late charge to post a home win tonight over the Mount, 64-61. The Lions are now 2-6 overall and return to action on Dec. 29-30 at the Wittenberg University Tournament.

Bethany boosted its lead to 10 points, 35-25 with 18:45 to play in the game, only to see the Lions bounce back with solid defense and accurate outside shooting. The Mount grabbed the lead at 46-45 with eight minutes left, thanks to a Katie Jo Collins (Cincinnati, OH/Mercy) layup. Carolyn Holt (Cincinnati, OH/Colerain) added a basket on the team's next possession, to put the Lions ahead 48-45 but Bethany went on a scoring run to grab back the advantage, 49-48 with 6:02 to play in the game. Bethany would go ahead by a 54-48 score, but the Lions would continue to compete to grab the lead, getting the deficit down to one point numerous times down the stretch, including a 60-59 score after two free throw by Shelbi Benzinger (Covington, KY/Scott). with 45 seconds to play. Bethany College would connect on four-of-four free throw attempts down the stretch, including the final two with two seconds left to end the scoring. Leah Schroeder (Fairfield, OH/McAuley) hit two free throws for the Mount with three seconds to play to pull the Mount to within one point. 62-61.

Holt led the Mount with 19 points and seven rebounds while Benzinger chipped in 13 points. The Lions forced 27 turnovers while committing 13 miscues but were out-shot from three-point range. Bethany College was eight-of-12 from long range to the Lions' two-of-12 from behind the three-point arc.
