Mount women's basketball team drops road game at Wittenberg University, 71-54

The College of Mount St. Joseph fell in their second game of the Wittenberg University Tournament, dropping a 71-54 decision to host Wittenberg University. The Lions, 2-8 overall, will resume action on Jan. 5 when they host HCAC-foe Earlhan College.

The Lions raced out to a 5-0 lead in the game against the Tigers today and led by a 12-6 margin with 15:20 on the clock after a basket by Gina Gonzales (Dearborn, MI/Father Gabriel Richard). Wittenberg tied the game at 12-all with 13:59 to play in the first half, and both teams played close throughout the end of the first half. The Tigers took the lead at the half, 35-24 with a late first half run. The Mount was out-shot, 48 to 38 percent from the floor, and was out-rebounded 24-14 in the first 20 minutes of action. Abby LaRosa (Cincinnati, OH/Mercy) led the Mount with six first half points.

Wittenberg opened the second half with a 17-6 run to push their lead out to a 52-30 margin with 14 minutes left in the game. The Tigers out-shot the Lions 54 to 36 percent in the game and won the rebounding battle, 36-33. The Lions were one-of-16 from behind the three-point arc, and 13-of-21 from the free throw line to Wittenberg's three-of-nine from long range and 12-of-18 from the charity stripe. Both teams committed 17 turnovers.

Carolyn Holt (Cincinnati, OH/Colerain) posted a double-double to lead the Mount, scoring 11 points and pulling down 11 rebounds. She was named to the All-Tournament team. Chelsey Doellman (Union, KY/Ryle) added nine points off the bench while LaRosa also chipped in nine points.
