Chris Howland (Loveland, OH/Loveland) completed 19 passes in 23 attempts for 313 yards and two TDs; while Derick Tabar (Cincinnati, OH/Colerain) had eight receptions for 145 yards and two scores helping the Mount to a 24-7 opening game win at home over Wilmington College. The game was a sellout for the Lions.
The Mount (1-0) resumes action on Sept. 18 when they open HCAC play with a home game against Anderson University. Game time is 6:00 p.m.ÂÂ
Brian Weimer (Cincinnati, OH/Oak Hills) kicked a 33-yard field goal in the first quarter to get the scoring started for the Lions while Howland and Tabar hooked up for a 44-yard TD score with under three minutes to play in the first half. Weimer added the PAT kick and the Lions led 10-0. Tabar and Howland added to that lead with 1:08 left in the opening half when they combined to score on a 17-yard TD strike.
Jake Davis (Cincinnati, OH/Anderson) added an 18-yard TD run with 9:05 showing on the clock in the third quarter â€" and Weimer converted the PAT kick to give the Mount a 24-0 lead. Wilmington (0-1) broke through on the scoreboard when they scored on a 15-yard pass play with just 1:27 to play in the game.
The Mount out-rushed the Quakers 151-54 as James Clay (Louisville, KY/Manual Dupont) led the way for the Lions, finishing with 57 yards on eight carries. The Lions out-gained Wilmington 495-181 in total offense and held a large edge in time of possession, 36:40 to 23:20.
Erik Prosser (Cincinnati, OH/Oak Hills) led a balanced Mount defensive effort with seven tackles and added one of the Lions’ five sacks in the game. The Lions had 10 tackles for loss yardage during the game.
