Host Franklin College supplied a strong defensive effort in the second half tonight, as they went on to post a 57-46 win over the Mount. The Lions, 6-17 overall, 6-11 in the HCAC, will conclude 2010-11 season play on Feb. 19 when the play at conference-rival Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology.
The Grizzlies and Lions struggled through an off-shooting night in the first half, and the two teams headed to the intermission with a 21-all tie. The Mount shot 33 percent from the field in the first 20 minutes of action while Franklin converted just 29 percent from the field. The Lions, however, jumped out early in the second half, hitting two three-pointers, to go ahead 29-24 but could not hold the lead. The Grizzlies would seize the advantage with 13:23 left, on a lay-up, to go ahead 35-34. They would never relinquish that lead as they pushed it out to double-digits (47-37) with 6:36 to play.
The Mount converted only 23 percent from the field in the second half, making just nine-of-40 shots, but stayed in the game by hitting seven-of-19 shots from behind the three-point arc. Franklin held a large advantage from the free throw line, hitting 11-of-24 shots, to the Lions' one-of-five from the free throw line. Franklin held a 60-42 rebounding edge, but committed 20 turnovers to the Mount's 16 turnovers.
Carolyn Holt (Cincinnati, OH/Colerain) led the Lions with 11 points, and also added six rebounds. Kat O'Neill (Burlington, KY/Conner) grabbed a game-high eight rebounds.
