Mount men's basketball teams clips Earlham in closing seconds, winning 68-67

David Mann (Hamilton, OH/Cincinnati Christian) hit a three-point shot with three seconds to play lifting the Mount today to a 68-67 win over host Earlham College. The win ends a Lions' eight-game losing streak, and ups their record to 4-17, 2-12 HCAC. They return to the court on Feb. 9 when they travel to HCAC-rival Transylvania University.

The Mount fell behind by a 30-23 score at the intermission, as the Quakers hit 50 percent of their shot attempts in the first 20 minutes of action. The two teams played the first half close throughout, and the Mount held the lead for most of the first half, until Earlham tied the game at 23-all and closed the first half holding the Lions scoreless the last 3:49 of the half.

Earlham pushed their advantage to 37-25 with 15:55 showing on the game clock in the second half, but a diversified Mount scoring attack helped the Lions keep the game close through most of the remaining half. Earlham connected on two free throws with 6:14 to play to grab a 55-44 lead, but the Lions got the deficit down to one point, 66-65 with 16 seconds to play when Ben Haarman (Cincinnati, OH/St. Bernard) made a layup. The Quakers hit one of two free throws with 12 seconds left to push their lead to 67-65 setting up Mann's game-winning shot.

Haarman led all scorers with 26 points while Mann chipped in nine points. The Mount forced 20 turnovers in the game while committing 13 turnovers. The Lions made six more shots than Earlham, including holding a 7-6 edge in three-pointers, while Earlham was 23-of-29 from the free throw line to the Mount's 11-of-23 from the charity stripe.
