The Mount's women's basketball team hosted Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology on Saturday afternoon in an HCAC showdown. The Lions were defeated by the Engineers by a final score of 55-44. The Mount returns to the court Wednesday, Feb. 1 at 7:30PM in the Harrington Center against Bluffton University.
Both teams struggled mightily to put points on the board in the first half. The Lions shot 19% to Rose-Hulman's 41% resulting in a 19-15 halftime score. The Lions managed to stay in the game forcing Rose-Hulman to commit 14 first half turnovers, which led to 10 points for the Mount. The Mount got off to a quick 5-0 start before Rose-Hulman rattled off 10 straight points in four minutes. The Lions would slowly inch their way back to a 10-9 score by holding the Engineers scoreless for seven minutes and 19 seconds. The Lions' defense held Rose-Hulman's leading scorer Alisa Dickerson (17.8 ppg) to just three points in the first half.
Sophomore guard Erica Miknius (Cincinnati, OH/Oak Hills) led the Lions in scoring in the first half with four points and chipped in one assist, one steal, and one rebound.
With 12:53 left in the game the Lions regained the lead, 26-25 on a jumper by senior guard Courtney Cole (Vevay, IN/Switzerland County). The Mount pushed their lead to three points after Katie Jo Collins (Cincinnati, OH/Mercy) stole the ball from Rose-Hulman's Heather Finnell and laid it in for two points. The Lions held onto the lead until the 11:04 mark when Alisa Dickerson made both shots from the line to give Rose-Hulman the lead, 29-28. Rose-Hulman began to pull away from the Mount pushing their lead to as high as 13 points before the buzzer sounded to close the game at 55-44.
Miknius went on to finish with a career-high 21 points in 34 minutes of action adding two assists, two steals, and one board before fouling out with two seconds left in the game.
