The College of Mount St. Joseph got solid balanced scoring, a good defensive effort and accurate second half shooting as they ended a seven-game losing streak today with a 56-50 home win over Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. The Mount, 7-12 overall, 3-9 in the HCAC, will be back in action on Feb. 1 when they play a conference hame at Bluffton University.
The Engineers held a 21-20 lead at the half, and scored the game's first points of the second half, before the Mount comeback began. After a 23-all tie at the 18:21 mark of the second half, the Lions would go on a 13-2 run over the next 4 1/2 minutes to take a 36-25 lead. Rose-Hulman whittled down the deficit to 36-31 with 10:15 to play but saw the Lions push the lead back out to 40-31 three minutes later. The Engineers would get as close as three points, 48-45, with 1:27 left in the game but the Lions would hold on down the stretch, thanks in part to solid free throw shooting. The Mount connected on eight-of-eight free throws in the game's final 1:24.
In the second half, the Mount connected on 59 percent from the field, and 13-of-18 from the free throw line, while holding Rose-Hulman to 35 percent shooting from the field, including three-of-10 from behind the three-point arc.
Clifford Cass (Cincinnati, OH/Mt. Healthy) led the Mount with 14 points while David Lane (Hamilton, OH/Ross) added 13 points. Andy Countryman (Peebles, OH/Peebles) chipped in 11 points.
