The College of Mount St. Joseph ended a 12-game losing streak tonight, as they rolled to a 72-45 HCAC home win over Bluffton University. The Lions, 3-17 overall, 3-10 in the conference, will return to action on Feb. 4 when they play at HCAC-rival Defiance College.
The Mount jumped out to a 27-15 lead at the intermission over the Beavers, thanks to a stingy defense that held Bluffton to just five field goals in 28 attempts. The Lions received points from eight different players in the opening half. The Mount pushed its lead out to 18 points, 41-23 with 12:56 left in the game and maintained a large lead throughout the remainder of the game. The Lions were aided in the game by solid free throw shooting, that saw them connect on 21-of-24 free throws in the game, and making five, three-point field goals. The win enabled the Lions to sweep the season series over Bluffton.
Four Mount players finished in doubles figures in points: Katie Jo Collins (Cincinnati, OH/Mercy), 15 points; Courtney Cole (Vevay, IN/Switzerland County), 14 points; Erica Miknius (Cincinnati, OH/Oak Hills), 10 points; and Alex Donald (Litchfield, ME/Oak Hill), 10 points. Leah Schroeder (Fairfield, OH/McAuley) added a career-high 15 rebounds while Cole chipped in six rebounds. Miknius had five assists and three steals. The Mount forced 18 Bluffton turnovers.
