Sophomore guard Erica Miknius (Cincinnati, OH/Oak Hills) fired in a career-high 23 points, helping the Lions to their second straight win as they won today at Earlham College, 70-56. The Mount, 5-18 overall, 5-11 in the HCAC, will play next at conference-leader Franklin College on Feb. 15.
The Lions jumped out to a 34-26 at the half over the Quakers, thanks to holding a 47 to 27 percent shooting advantage. Earlham was able to connect on only one-of-12 three-point attempts in the opening half, but kept the margin under double-digits by hitting nine-of-11 free throws, to the Mount's two-of-six from the free throw line. After an 11-all tie with 13:12 to play in the first half, the Mount pulled away, leading by as many as nine points in the first half. Miknius led the way for the Lions, scoring 10 points in the opening half.
The Mount led throughout the second half, but saw their advantage challenged in the closing minutes of the game. Earlham cut the deficit to six points, 55-49 with 6:22 to play and got to within seven points, 62-55, with 3:09 after hitting two free throws, but could get no closer as the Mount out-scored them 8-1 down the stretch. The Mount had their best shooting game of the season as a team,hitting 49 percent from the field, while holding Earlham to 32 percent shooting. Earlham held a slight lead in rebounding, 39-37.
Miknius' 23 points led all scorers, while teammates Katie Jo Collins (Cincinnati, OH/Mercy) and Leah Schroeder (Fairfield, OH/McAuley) each added 13 points and eight rebounds.
