Lions' women's basketball team loses road match-up at Defiance College, 71-55

Host Defiance College jumped out to a 19-point lead at the half, as they connected on seven three-point shots in the first half, en route to a 71-55 win against today the Mount. The Lions, 3-18 overall, 3-11 in the HCAC, will be back in conference action on Feb. 8 when they host Transylvania University.

The Yellow Jackets aided their strong outside shooting in the first half by converting eight-of-10 free throws in the opening half as they jumped out to a 43-24 advantage at the intermission. They also scored nine points off 10 Mount first half turnovers. The Mount, with Katie Jo Collins (Cincinnati, OH/Mercy) making her presence known in the paint, cut the deficit to 10 points, 54-44, with 7:23 to play in the game after a free throw by Rachel Blevins (Middletown, OH/Madison). The Lions, however, would get no closer, as they were outscored 17-11 down the stretch.

Defiance out-shot the Mount from the field, 43 to 26 percent, making eight-of-16 three-point shots to the Lions' two-of-14 from long range. The Mount did make 23-of-31 free throws, to Defiance's 17-of-21 from the charity stripe, and controlled the boards, 45-33. The Lions committed 17 turnovers while forcing 12 Defiance miscues.

Collins led the way for the Mount with 24 points and five rebounds. Erica Miknius (Cincinnati, OH/Oak Hills) chipped in eight points while Melanie Monahan (Mason, OH/Bishop Fenwick), Leah Schroeder (Fairfield, OH/McAuley) and Blevins each grabbed seven rebounds.
