Conference-leader Rose-Hulman hit on 57 percent of its shots in the first half, racing out to a 33-20 lead at the intermission, as they registered a 60-39 home win today over the Mount. The Lions are now 6-13 overall, 5-7 in the HCAC. They are in a tie for sixth place with Bluffton University for the sixth and final spot for the HCAC Tournament.
The two teams played closely on the scoreboard throughout most of the first half today, but the Engineers pulled away at the 10:27 mark by hitting two free throws to gain a 15-13 lead. Rose-Hulman would out-score the Mount, 18-7 to the end of the first half, as the Lions were held to 32 percent field goal shooting in the first 20 minutes of play.
The Engineers would maintain that double-digit lead through the second half, and add to it, leading by as many as 23 points at one point of the game. The Lions would have two long scoreless spells in the game - 10:56 to 8:53, and then again, this time for five minutes later in the half, as they made only 26 percent of their shots from the field in the second half. Rose-Hulman closed out the game by connecting on 10-of-13 second half free throws. They out-rebounded the Mount, 36-24 but committed 11 turnovers while forcing seven Mount turnovers. The Lions made 10-of-23 free throws in the game.
Ken Kunkel (Cincinnati, OH/Colerain) paced the Mount with 13 points and 10 rebounds, his third double-double of the season. Rose-Hulman, which swept the two-game season series over the Lions, went to 17-2 overall on the season.
